Damn You (A Vantascest Short)

An uncomfortable pang rang through Karkat's stomach.

“Kankri, damn you, and damn your eggs,” he muttered beneath his breath while glaring at his dancestor from the couch. Kankri, who had been making breakfast in the kitchen, turned around to face Karkat. The smell of fluffy pancakes wafted through the air, making Karkat's stomach rumble. Kankri shut off the stove.

“Did you say something, Karkat?” the boy's dancestor asked.

Karkat growled in reply, “I said damn you! And-” A red-sweatered hand covered Karkat's mouth.

“Now, Karkat,” Kankri began, “you know better than to use such triggering language! You're lucky it was only me that you offended this time. Still, you should try to avoid that in the future. Not to mention, in your situation, with the grubs on the way - “ Karkat's face flushed red with rage.

He moved Kankri's hand from his mouth and grabbed him roughly, pulling him down for a kiss. Although originally angry, Karkat's annoyance died down as he felt the soft lips of his matesprit on his own. The younger troll felt like he could stay in the moment forever, maybe take it farther, despite the aching condition of his body.

Kankri didn't appear to have the same idea as he gently pulled away, staring into Karkat's red-tinted pupils. He would have the same red tint, but his eyes were white. Being dead does that to you. A smile appeared on his face as he moved his hands to Karkat's swollen belly, feeling the unborn life inside.

“I know this must be uncomfortable to go through, Karkat. But they will be worth it. We can only hope you don't pass on your foul language to our grubs.” Kanrki chuckled as he rubbed his decendant's belly. He could have sworn he heard Karkat purring. The pain in Karkat's features faded away, replaced by a peaceful expression that was near angelic.

“Oh? Does this make you feel better?” Kankri asked, and Karkat nodded. The rubbing continued for a few minutes, and just as Karkat was about to purr again, Kankri stopped. Karkat attempted to remain indifferent while his dancestor retrieved the pancakes he had made earlier. Karkat perked up considerably when he saw the food.

Kankri set a plate down in front of him and sat next to him on the couch. Both ate in near silence – no rants from Karkat, no lectures from Kankri; it was just an agreeable silence, only broken by the munching noises.

“Kankri?” Karkat spoke up. His matesprit's eyes settled on him.

“What?”

“What do you think our grubs will be like?” Karkat questioned, glancing down at his abdomen. He could only imagine what raising grubs would be like, and anxiety pricked into his heart. What if he failed as a parent?

“I'm sure they will be wonderful, Karkat. Now, why don't you come over here and let me touch your stomach? I want to feel them again.” Kankri replied, setting Karkat's anxiety at ease. He set his place down and settled on Kankri's lap. The nervousness that possessed him was still there, vibrating through his being, but with his matesprit, the feeling dulled. He knew that he wouldn't be going through it by himself, and the thought made him purr once again. Karkat relaxed in Kankri's arms.

The last thing he muttered before drifting off to sleep was “Damn... you... Kan... kri.”
